Motorcycle Base Layer Design & Manufacturing Guide

Motorcycle Base Layers for Riding Comfort

Motorcycle base layers are developed to sit directly against the skin and help riders remain comfortable beneath protective apparel. Unlike ordinary T-shirts or leggings, riding base layers must manage perspiration, reduce friction and maintain mobility while worn under close-fitting jackets, trousers or leather suits.

Our development process begins by identifying the intended climate, riding application, garment type and target fit. Patterns are engineered to follow the rider’s body closely without creating excessive compression or restricting movement. Sleeve length, torso shape, shoulder construction, rise and leg proportions are adjusted for the seated riding position.

Base layer tops can be developed with crew necks, mock necks, quarter zippers, raglan sleeves or extended rear hems. Bottoms may include ergonomic waistbands, shaped knees, gusseted crotches and ankle lengths designed to sit comfortably inside motorcycle boots.

Seam positioning is especially important because bulky seams may create pressure points under armour, tight garments or riding suits. Flatlock seams, bonded construction or strategically reduced seam layouts can be used to improve comfort and minimise chafing.

Ventilation zones may be positioned around the underarms, back, chest, groin and behind the knees to increase airflow in high-heat areas. Each prototype is assessed for fit, stretch recovery, seam comfort, mobility and layering compatibility before bulk-production approval.

Materials & Protection

The performance of motorcycle base layers depends on the fabric’s ability to move moisture, dry efficiently, stretch with the rider and maintain comfort over extended periods. Depending on the intended season and price level, garments can be manufactured using polyester, polyamide, elastane, polypropylene, merino-blend fabrics or technical knitted materials.

Warm-weather base layers commonly use lightweight moisture-wicking fabrics with breathable mesh zones. These materials are designed to move perspiration away from the skin and improve evaporation beneath ventilated motorcycle clothing.

Cold-weather base layers may use brushed inner surfaces, thermal knits or layered constructions that help retain warmth while continuing to manage moisture. Different fabric weights can be selected for mild, cold or very cold riding conditions.

Stretch can be incorporated through elastane content, knitted structure or body-mapped panels. Four-way stretch fabrics are particularly useful in close-fitting garments because they allow the material to follow movement through the shoulders, hips, knees and elbows.

Construction options include flatlock stitching, seamless knitting, bonded seams, anti-chafe panels and reinforced waistband or cuff areas. Mesh ventilation, compression zones, antibacterial treatments and odour-management finishes may also be considered according to the customer’s specification and material availability.

The final fabric and construction combination is selected according to the intended climate, garment weight, compression level, retail position and desired rider experience.

OEM / ODM & Private Label Manufacturing

Glaze provides OEM, ODM and private-label manufacturing services for brands developing custom motorcycle base layers. Customers may supply complete technical packs, measurement charts, artwork, reference garments or an initial product concept.

Our product-development team can assist with fabric selection, fit development, panel mapping, ventilation placement, seam construction and size grading. Base layers can be developed as individual tops or bottoms, matching two-piece sets or complete seasonal collections.

Every element can be customised, including fabric composition, GSM, stretch level, fit, sleeve length, neckline, waistband, panel layout, mesh placement and colour combinations. Available product directions include lightweight summer tops, thermal winter sets, compression garments, seamless base layers and moisture-wicking riding underwear.

Branding options include sublimation, screen printing, heat-transfer logos, silicone transfers, reflective details, woven labels and printed internal labels. Private-label services can also include size labels, care labels, hangtags, barcode stickers, individual bags and branded retail packaging.

Men’s, women’s and unisex fits can be developed using customer-provided size charts or measurements created for the intended market. Prototype sampling allows customers to evaluate fit, stretch, fabric feel, moisture-management construction and overall appearance before approving bulk production.

Minimum Order Quantity & Production

Every motorcycle base layer project begins with a review of the garment type, measurements, fabric performance, seasonal purpose and branding requirements. Prototype development is recommended before bulk production so the customer can assess fit, compression, seam comfort, stretch recovery and compatibility with protective riding apparel.

Standard production generally begins from 50 pieces per style. The final minimum order quantity depends on fabric availability, custom colours, printing method, labels, packaging and overall design complexity.

Sample development normally requires approximately 10–14 working days after the design, measurements, materials and branding details have been confirmed. Custom knitted fabrics, seamless constructions, sublimated artwork or specially developed finishes may require additional time.

After sample approval, production includes fabric inspection, pattern preparation, cutting, printing or sublimation, stitching, seam finishing, branding application and quality control. Measurements, stretch recovery, seam quality, print placement and left-to-right symmetry are checked against the approved sample.

Completed base layers are inspected, folded, packed according to the customer’s private-label requirements and prepared for worldwide export.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some common questions about our company.

Standard production generally begins from 50 pieces per style. The final MOQ depends on the fabric, custom colours, printing method, construction type, labels and packaging requirements. Prototype sampling is available before confirming bulk production.

A motorcycle base layer helps manage perspiration, reduce friction and improve comfort beneath protective riding apparel. Depending on the fabric, it can also support cooling in warm weather or insulation in colder riding conditions.

Base layers can be manufactured using moisture-wicking polyester, polyamide, elastane, polypropylene, technical knitted fabrics and selected merino blends. The final material depends on the desired season, stretch, warmth, drying performance and target price.

Yes. Summer base layers can use lightweight moisture-wicking fabrics, breathable mesh zones and fast-drying constructions. Ventilation areas can be positioned around the underarms, back, chest, groin and behind the knees.

Yes. Winter base layers can be developed using brushed thermal fabrics, heavier technical knits and moisture-managing constructions designed to retain warmth beneath motorcycle jackets and trousers.

Yes. We manufacture long-sleeve and short-sleeve tops, leggings, thermal bottoms and coordinated two-piece sets. Fit, fabric weight and panel construction can be matched across the full collection.

Yes. Flatlock stitching can be used to reduce seam bulk and minimise irritation beneath fitted motorcycle clothing. Seamless or bonded construction may also be considered depending on the design and order quantity.

Yes. Compression-style base layers can be developed using high-stretch fabrics and body-contoured patterns. The required compression level should be confirmed during product development to maintain comfort and mobility.

Yes. Customers can customise fabrics, colours, panel layouts, sublimated artwork, printed logos, heat transfers, labels and packaging. Branding can be visible externally or applied discreetly inside the garment.

Motorcycle base layers are generally worn beneath certified protective garments and are not usually intended to provide standalone abrasion or impact protection. EN 17092 applies to protective motorcycle garments, so certification requirements depend on how the final product is designed and marketed.
